The Confederates under Gen. Sterling Price may have taken the fort, but Union efforts at Fort Davidson in the Battle of Pilot Knob were crucial to blunting the last Confederate offensive into Missouri. Battle of Pilot Knob State Historic Site preserves and interprets the running battle through the Arcadia Valley. The site’s open, grassy fields include the fort’s old earthworks, two Confederate burial trenches, and a visitor center with a narrated story of the battle and its context within the Civil War.
Brogans’ Trail is named after the footwear commonly worn by Civil War soldiers. The trail is relatively flat for a healthy short exercise hike. Built in 2010, the trail makes use of an area of the historic site that has been touched by mining as well as a forested area along the East Branch of Knob Creek.
You can make arrangements for special interpretation programs for large groups, including re-enactments of the life of soldiers, by contacting site staff at least two weeks prior to arrival. Such arrangements are subject to scheduling conflicts and manpower considerations.
