Greers Ferry Lake is a favorite water playground nestled in the foothills of the Ozarks in north central Arkansas. This 40,000-acre masterpiece pleases water enthusiasts of all types. The lake is surrounded by an abundance of rock outcropping, trees, and wildlife making it a leading tourist destination.
Since the formation of Greers Ferry Lake in the early 1960s, tourism has thrived around the lake, and the population has topped 6,000 in Heber Springs. Through the 1970s, many luxurious neighborhoods were built around the lake, and continue to be built. Various activities are available to the public: swimming, cliff diving, boating, fishing, scuba diving, camping, and other water recreational activities are popular among locals and tourists alike. Famous for rainbow trout, the Little Red River, in the cool water coming from under the dam, has become a favorite fishing spot year round. Several camp grounds and boat docks/ramps offer direct access to the river.
Greers Ferry Dam
The lake, formed by Greers Ferry Dam, was completed in July 1964 at a cost of approximately $46,500,000. The lake and dam were dedicated in 1963 by President John F. Kennedy, his last public appearance before the fateful trip to Dallas.

Fishing on Greers Ferry Lake
Fishing on Greers Ferry Lake is superb throughout the year. The Arkansas Game & Fish Commission has stocked every game fish native to the state. The lake also holds the state record for walleye and striped bass. During the winter months, one doesn’t have to look long to find anglers who have taken huge walleyes. Fifteen- to 18-pounders are the norm during the late-February to mid-March spawning time. Many think this is the probable home of another world record. Other fish such as channel catfish, largemouth and white bass, and crappie are abundant and attract fishermen from all over the country.
Odds are very good that the next state largemouth bass record will come from Greers Ferry Lake. A largemouth bass weighing in at 15 pounds, 15 ounces was caught on Greers Ferry Lake in 1988. This U.S. Army Corps of Engineers impoundment has produced several state-record hybrids, and the lake became the focus of nationwide attention when Jerald Shaum caught his world-record 27-pound, 5-ounce hybrid in 1997.
